To prepare for this assignment, read: Hammer, M., & Stanton, S. (1999). How process enterprises really work. Harvard Business Review, 77(6), 108118. Raghu, T. S. (2010). Creating a process-oriented enterprise at Pinnacle West (HBS No. 910E02). Boston, MA: Harvard Business School Publishing. A process-oriented culture does not just happen within an organization. Senior management support is needed to successfully change the culture. A process-oriented culture may require departmental or team reorganization so that managers can assume responsibility for specific processes. In other words, the organization explicitly assigns ownership of the core processes. Current process improvement initiatives should also be re-examined to determine if they align with the strategic objectives of the organization and facilitate the creation of a process-oriented culture. Focusing on this alignment can minimize potentially harmful results from having disconnected process improvement initiatives. Review Exhibit 6 in the Raghu article. Prepare an assessment of the Pinnacle West case study that addresses the following: What are the requirements for creating a process-oriented culture in an organization? To what extent does Pinnacle West address these requirements? Where is it lacking? Where are there gaps? What can you generalize from your analysis of this case study to apply to planning your business process improvement project?
