Psychoanalystic Narratives and Subtexts in films Please write what you think: In Me, Myself & Irene, Jim Carrey plays Charlie, a shy, timid, mild-mannered cop who suffers a psychotic breakdown. Charlie’s Ego breaks down, and when that happens, his alter ego Hank, who embodies and expresses the sexual and aggressive instincts of the Id, appears. In Pretty Woman, the main character’s is driven by an Oedipal resentment of his father. And it’s something he uncovers through therapy. Note how he is posed with Julia Roberts: not as lovers but rather as mother and child. In the tub, this wet, womb-like place. Remember Citizen Kane? Look at what he collects: Wives and statues of women. Remember what Rosebud is, what it represents? Note how uncontrollably angry Superman gets when his mother is threatened. Read the subtext here. General Zod’s threat to Martha is not just physical violence, but a sexual one. Although Superman cannot himself be with his mother, it is completely unthinkable that anyone else can take his place. Finally, think of the Avengers and the Justice League. Run the backstories of those characters through your mind, one by one. How many daddy issues and mommy issues can you identify?
